The 8th Jerusalem Art Conference
Ezra Orion, artist, poet and philosopher, was a pioneer of the environmental sculpture movement in Israel. Orion installed monumental sculptures throughout Israel and around the world, from the heart of the desert to the Himalayan peaks. In his art he sought to create a spiritual experience, a secular temple, to which one makes pilgrimage and faces the full force of nature. In addition to his prolific work, Orion led sculpture symposiums and events where he collaborated with other artists to promote environmental art. Later, he stretched the boundaries of sculpture when he launched a laser beam into space, creating a sculpture that reaches beyond our space and time.
Orion examined in his works the relationship between the natural expanse and human sculpture. He developed a number of artistic manifests, among them one that framed nature as a generator and driver of creation. According to his theory, the sculpture is a ‘launchpad of the consciousness’ and its role is to reach within the viewer’s soul, inspiring thoughts and feelings there within. Nature itself is a sort of sculpture, created by physical forces, that generates similar processes in the viewer. To create a spiritual experience, all that the artist has to do is to create an addition to nature which will guide the viewer’s focus and glorify his experience.
The exhibition ‘Framed Expanse’ engages with Orion’s ideas after his passing and contains an internal paradox – the attempt to return to a gallery space one who ventured out to create in the natural expanse. The curators focus on Orion’s theories and the sculpture-site-viewer relationship as it manifests in the artificial space. By using the works of art photographer Avraham Hai, who accompanied Orion in his work and captured the observer’s point of view, we can return to the spiritual experience of standing in front of the sculpture. Incorporating Orion’s principles in the exhibition design, including his approach to environmental installation, creates a new experience that is influenced by both the space and the works.
In addition to Orion’s works the exhibition includes sculptures created by other artists that he collaborated with and that were installed as part of two art events Orion organized. The artists: Micha Ulman, Dalya Meiri, Hava Mehutan, Noam Rabinowitz, Dov Heler and Itzu Rimmer.
The exhibition will also include ‘A Launchpad for The consciousness’, 2015, a short film by Ezry Keydar
